"The precepts of the law are these: to live honestly, to injure no one, and to give every man his due. The study of law consists of two branches, law public and law private. The former relates to the welfare of the Roman State; the latter to the advantage of the individual citizen. Of private law then we may say that it is of threefold origin, being collected from the precepts of nature, from those of the law of nations, or from those of the civil law of Rome.''

During the time period of the Dark Ages, everywhere was a very difficult place to live. These Dark Ages were a result of the fall of the Roman Empire. When Rome fell, all of their technology and education fell with them. The Byzantine Empire was set in Eastern Europe during the time of the Dark Ages. The capital, Constantinople, was a great place to live and was thriving in the city, but the other parts of the Empire weren't as an amazing place to live. This is why this Empire is rated at an average rating. Constantinople was a city of bustling market places that attracted the whole ancient world. In this city, there were 400 mile long aqueducts that made a huge impact on the empire. These aqueducts supplied water to hundreds of thousands of people in the city, making the city's population rapidly increase to half a million people. In Europe, many public works were destroyed from the wake of the fall of Rome. One good plus side of this Empire is that Constantine ordered the re-building of the fallen public works such as cathedrals and monasteries, and the large construction of the Hagia Sophia. The Hagia Sophia was a large church that was the total opposite of the dark wooden, small churches that were around during the Dark Ages. The Hagia Sophia was a brilliant piece of work that took many years to construct. Another plus side of the Empire is the location. The Byzantine Empire, specifically Constantinople, was located where it made invaders almost impossible to attack. All of these things previously listed were all good points of this Empire during the Dark Ages, but there were many negative things in this Empire. After Constantine died, there were countless rulers after him trying to keep their Empire alive. Justinian was the next ruler that made a huge impact on the Empire. Justinian helped create and destroy the Empire. Justinian was so obsessed about increasing the size of his Empire that he bankrupt all of this people and taxed them very heavily along the way. The victory he received along the way was only temporary, and he ended up costing him more than he gained back. The one good thing that Justinian did was he re-created a law code of the Roman Empire, which ended lasting many years after. All of these elements of good and bad things add up to a average quality of life, where most people did not have to worry about where their next meal would come from, but they didn't have as an advanced culture as ancient China!
